The Unsuspecting Public (UP) write and perform their own material, drawing on musical influences from standardised blues, jazz, soul and rock, to the more innovative genres of psychedelic rock and new age punk, garage and grunge. Playing hard and heavy, the UP melt everything down and remould everything for a new purpose, making for a very unique and confrontational sound. Their new album, 'You Are The Unsuspecting Public', was launched on March 17th at the Sligo Trades Club and sees the first commercial release by the band. Recorded at studios in Enniskillen and Cootehall, County Roscommon, this thirteen track CD represents a collective of original material written and composed by the trio over the past three years. The U.P. say that "The album captures the groups eclectic musical tastes, ranging from hard-rock punk to psychedelic country, even including an electro-rock cover version of Hawkwinds' 'Urban Guerrilla' - a collaboration with well-known electro-muso/DJ, Jay Toole...This album is loud, raw and sometimes toungue-in-cheek.." 'You Are The Unsuspecting Public' kicks out hard with the first track Unsuspecting Public Party - this rock-punk fusion is equally suitable for head-banging or motorcycle riding. Motorhead meets The Sex Pistols. Catalogue House and Rats In The City bring on more of the same, high energy rock vocals, jumpy guitars and frantic beats. Friends changes the pace and slows things down slightly. Starting out dreamy, with Hawaiian sounds that hark back to Elvis movies, then gently bringing in a soft vocal that just stops short of a modern Jesus and Mary Chain. Mild and mannered, this is a lazy if not totally laid back rock tune that provides a short reprieve and one of the 'easy listeners' of this album. Teething takes on an indie-rock feel with sidling lyrics and sliding guitar. The chorus is raw yet catchy and an overall funky vibe makes this an accessible track for the mainstream. In a complete departure, Urban Guerrilla, starts out with a distinctive up tempo dance beat, before introducing a live-wire guitar and vocal. Both interesting and unusual, this mind melting electro-metal dance/rock could well be the work of Jane's Addiction on a Fat Boy Slim raga tip. A noteworthy cross-over tune. Recorded live at a Galway gig in October of last year, CafŽ Necrofilia finds the band on top rocking form, jamming like the mad things they are. Head-banging, nerve jangling punk shouts combined with jazzy freestyle interludes, varied and loud! Surfing the waves of rock, Got To Rise hits out cold and calm, whilst Still Life and The Seeds whips a twisty spin on the days of the Monkees and the Beach Boys. Communication. You Can Never Tell. says a lot about the band and really shows how well they fuse musical styles - using surfer rock with a bit of punk styling and the odd Ska moment here and there. These trippy guitar riffs would be at home on a Pulp fiction, reservoir dogs soundtrack, which, added to the highly strung vocal, jumpy rhythm makes for a lively and jaunty number with wider appeal. 'You Are The Unsuspecting Public' is definitely not one for the faint hearted. This is an album of hard rock and punk and, whilst it does have it's quieter moments there is (naturally) a tendency towards more loud and frenzied tones. As it says on the label, 'loud and raw', this is pedal to the metal, riff-laden, rock overdrive. Psychedelic and psychotic, but ultimately more interesting than they first appear...
