Neighbours object to plans for Hargadon’s

TWO objections have been lodged with An Bord Pleanala against planning permission granted for work to the rear of Hargadon Brothers bar to incorporate it into the new Johnston’s Court shopping centre.

The appeals to the planning board have been submitted by Tony Wehrly of Wehrly Brothers Jewellers, O’Connell Street, and Brian Crummy, John Street, whose premises are adjoining Hargadon’s.

The Johnston’s Court developers Ray and Eileen Monahan were granted planning permission by Sligo Borough Council to demolish an existing derelict shed and part of a single storey flat roof modern extension to the rear of Hargadon’s pub.

They also got approval to remodel the rear gable of the original premises and construct a new staircase to provide a fire escape from the upper floor of Johnston’s Court and the upper floor of Hargadon’s via the existing laneway to John Street and to extend units 23 and 24 in Johnston’s Court. However, Tony Wehrly, in his submission, expresses concern about an existing right of way that he enjoys to the rear of Hargadon’s over the former beer garden and which he shares with the owners of Hargadon’s

He said that he had received a letter from the Monahans confirming his rights would not be affected but he said there had been no discussion or agreement prior to the planning application being lodged.

Brian Crummy expressed concern that because the development abuts the rear boundary wall of his property there would be a loss of light to the rear of his property because of the height and mass of the new building.

He is also concerned about the structural integrity of the existing wall to support the new construction. He also suggests that the proposal would have a serious impact on any future development of his property.

There was a public house at the premises from 1868 until its closure last year
