Portmarnock Golf Club can exclude women from being members The argument being that Portmarnock is a 'boys-only club', and has to be accepted the same as gay clubs, rugby clubs, or women-only book clubs. The General Manager - John Quigley was pleased with the court's decision APPEAL RESULT Equality Authority v. Portmarnock Golf Club & Ors 2005 IEHC 235 10 June 2005 The court upheld a 2005 High Court finding that the club is not a "discriminating" club. Women can play and enter the clubhouse but cannot have full membership. Portmarnock is a registered club and can continue to sell alcohol without changing its membership policy. By a majority of three to two the Equality Authority's appeal against a decision that Portmarnock Golf Club can exclude women from being members was dismissed. One of the judges that voted against the Equality Authority appeal is a woman. The Equality Authority is funded by the tax payer. Portmarnock and Roayl Dublin are the only two golf clubs in Ireland to uphold this policy.
