Deadman’s Point may get new lease of life
IF local people in Rosses Point came into Sligo County Council with proposals to refurbish the swimming pool at Deadman’s Point, the council might be able to work in partnership with them.
That was the message to a meeting of Sligo County Council at which Clr. Declan Bree asked the county manager what proposals the council had to repair and refurbish the swimming pool at Deadman’s Point.
Clr. Bree said little or no maintenance work had been carried out on the pool in the recent past and it clearly required a programme of repairs and refurbishment.
Clr. Bree said that local people in Rosses Point were particularly annoyed that the council had not taken steps to refurbish the pool and to remove large rocks which impeded swimmers.
“We are fortunate to have such an amenity and I am at a loss to understand why the council does not maintain it properly,” Clr. Bree said.
“Can we have an assurance that repair/refurbishment works will be carried out on the pool before the summer,” Clr. Bree asked.
A report to councillors stated that normal maintenance repairs would be undertaken to the swimming pool at Deadman’s Point prior to the summer season.
However, there were no plans to undertake a major refurbishment of this facility in the current year.
Acting Director of Services Declan Breen said he understood there were no funds to carry out works at this location. However, if the local people came in, they might be able to look at it in partnership.
Clr. Jimmy McGarry described it as “a shame” the pool was in such a bad state of repair.
Clr. Bree said he was disappointed there was no funding available in the council budget. But he had no doubt the people of Rosses Point would co-operate with any proposals the council would bring forth.
He said the people who used the pool at Rosses Point were the customers of the council. He pointed out the money that the council had spent on consultants’ reports and he was sure people who used the pool would not be pleased there would be no funds for Deadman’s Pool.
Mr. Breen said he understood the facilities were in a bad state and they would “have to look at this carefully.”
